Cooking Class for Expectant Mothers

Saturday, October 1, 2011

In collaboration with Nurture, Family Network’s Right From the Start, Desde el Principio, program is presenting cooking classes for Latino expectant mothers, helping them to prepare healthy meals for themselves and their babies. Along with a monthly cooking demonstration, the mothers-to-be are taught about essential nutrients during pregnancy and given recipes and prenatal nutrition fact sheets to take home.

Now in its second year, the Nurture-Family Network cooking class has provided nutritious, low-cost, high-value recipes and cooking demonstrations to 52 expectant mothers to date. Recent recipes demonstrated included spicy black-eyed pea soup and pumpkin pecan oatmeal.

Recipes are tied to a different nutrition topic each month, including such topics as the importance of folate, prenatal stress management, benefits of breastfeeding, blood sugar control, getting adequate calcium and vitamin D, among others.

Nurture is a North Shore nonprofit dedicated to improving the nutrition and health of limited-resource families. The mostly volunteer organization addresses issues including hunger, childhood obesity, wellness and an increasingly unhealthy food chain. Nurture focuses on low-income families with children at high risk for nutritional and health problems.
