Family Focus Facts

Our mission is to promote the well-being of children from birth to age 18 by supporting and strengthening their families within their communities. All of our programs are based on the Principles of Family Support, which promote respect for our families and their cultures and a commitment to working with—not for—families to achieve each family’s goals.

  • The basics of what we do includes: providing child development education and skills training for teen and adult parents, developmental health screenings, early intervention services, early literacy, home visiting, afterschool programming, health and fitness education for parents and children, ESL, GED, citizenship and computer literacy classes for adults, plus assistance connecting with community services and healthcare providers.
  • We help about 20,000 people annually; includes individuals actively enrolled in family support services; and individuals receiving outreach and crisis support.
  • We operate 7 centers in Chicagoland.
  • We operate afterschool programs in more than 40 schools.
  • We were founded in Evanston in 1976 by Bernice Weissbourd, a leading scholar and educator in child development.
  • We have an operating budget of about $12.5 million.
  • We have a staff of 200 employees and an additional 200 contractors.

Our community-based centers are located in Aurora, DuPage, Evanston, and Highland Park, Illinois, and the Chicago communities of Englewood, Hermosa/Cicero, and North Lawndale.

We conduct additional outreach and school-based programs in Chicago-area Highwood and Melrose Park and in the Chicago communities of Albany Park, Greater Grand Crossing, West Englewood, Humboldt Park, West Town, and South Lawndale.
